Happy birthday, Marshall Mathers!
by chuckofish
Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), better known by his stage name Eminem (often stylized as EMINƎM) and by his alter ego Slim Shady, is an American rapper, record producer, songwriter, and actor. And he turns 40 today!
And, yes, I am a big fan. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. I think Em is a latter-day poet and an example to all frustrated, unhappy, unchallenged kids in bad family environments who need to express their anger and channel their emotions into a creative outlet like writing. Using their words, as teachers have been saying for years, instead of violence. He is the real deal.
I suggest we all watch 8 Mile in honor of his birthday. This is a great movie, directed by the talented Curtis Hanson in 2002. It is not just a “rap-version of Saturday Night Fever“, a movie I despise. Eminem is really good in this movie and very appealing. I also have to hand it to him for not wanting to be a movie star and for turning down all offers to make more movies.
This is not to say that I didn’t feel like Ned Flanders at a Chris Rock concert while watching this movie. And I am no fan of rap or hip-hop. No, I am not. But Eminem works hard at his craft. I can appreciate that. He bettered himself. I like to think that under the vulgarity and the bravura is a fine young man who wants to do the right thing.
Happy Birthday, Marshall!

Nice post! Glad to see you feature a Detroiter. Have you ever been down 8-mile on your Detroit visits? I used to drive on it every day when I worked for a summer filing paperwork at my Mom’s office. Of course, the disparity between 8-mile in Grosse Pointe (we call it Vernier, anyway, but it is the same road!) and the strip-club haven just a few miles into the city is pretty telling. Also, I used to be a huge Eminem fan when I was in middle school – the only rapper I’ve ever liked! It probably goes without saying that Dad did not share my enthusiasm…
Also, I hope you are prepared to feature Detroit some more next week if there is a Tigers vs. Cardinals rematch in the World Series!
Yes, we’re crossing our fingers for a 1968 re-match with a better outcome, of course, for our home team!
P.S. I almost mentioned that my brother and famille live in the 3-1-3, but decided to stay on subject (for once).
There was an editorial cartoon in the Free Press in 1968 – a Cardinal in a bird cage hanging from the (then new) Gateway Arch, with a Tiger reaching up, claws extended, …… After all these years I clearly haven’t forgotten the image.
Ellen, I think I mentioned during the wedding-weekend that in some of those letters of yours I found from back in the day you were ALL ABOUT effusively expressing your love for Eminem. Class pen-pal subject matter.
And don’t forget 2006!!
Nice post on Eminem!
Um duh–I did forget! I was focused on ’68 when we were the World Champions as we are now.
That’s the one to revenge!
Yes! We’ll toast to him and the Cards tonight. Great post, dual personality.
You forgot to mention, but you took me to see 8 Mile AT THE MOVIES! I was 14! What a sight you and I must’ve been haha. I believe that he, like you idol, Dolly Parton, would have been Shakespeare or Mozart if born in another age. He’s the best.

Too young, anyway to go to a rated R movie without an adult! You were embarrassed but I thought it was great.
I wish I could watch 8 Mile with you tonight!!!
I own it!! The dang Cardinals game has been delayed for 2 hours now so I haven’t gotten to watch it.
I asked your Mother last night if it was around our house anywhere (nope – at yours).
