Today in 1921 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated by President Warren G. Harding at Arlington Cemetery.

And today is Veterans Day. So we remember American veterans, known and unknown.

Chamerlins

Guy Russell Chamberlin and Arthur Newell Chamberlin at home in Burlington, Vermont pre-WWI

Here’s to two brothers who went to war–one came back and the other did not.

We’ll toast our grandfather Arthur and his brother Guy, our father Newell,  all our other ancestors who served their country, and indeed, all veterans.

O Lord God of Hosts, stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect the [military] of our country. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

–BCP, 1928

Let’s all take a moment.

Let me think about that for a moment

Here is some food for thought on this Thursday n November. Take a moment (or two or three) for some deep thoughts.

1. “The trouble with you,” Walter had said in a recent phone conversation, “is that you’re too prepared. You don’t give the Holy Spirit room to do wondrous things. You need to take risks now and then–that’s what makes life snap, crackle and pop.”

–Jan Karon, At Home in Mitford

2. “When I was an object of much contempt and derision in the university,” he later wrote, “I strolled forth one day, buffeted and afflicted, with my little Testament in my hand … The first text which caught my eye was this: ‘They found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to bear his cross.'”

–Charles Simeon

3. “That man is the richest whose pleasures are the cheapest.”

–Henry David Thoreau

Lest we forget

Earlier this week the boy was a volunteer escort on an “Honor Flight” to Washington D.C. You can read all about it on his blog here.

This is an awesome program. Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Check out their website here.

Pretty cool, don’t you think?

A belated salute to our veterans

by chuckofish

Yesterday was Veterans’ Day, so I thought I would post this photo of our grandfather Lt. ANC Jr who was a pilot in WWI. His younger brother, also a lieutenant, was killed in the Argonne Forest in September 1918. After that ANC became a full fledged member of the Lost Generation and spent many years off-and-on in Europe. Eventually he came home and voted Republican.

So hats off to all those past and present who serve our country in the military, especially those like Uncle Guy who make the ultimate sacrifice.
