Happy birthday, Mary, Dolly (and Buffy)

by chuckofish

mary's birth announcement Mary 1926

Readers of this blog may recall that today is the birthday of our dear mother, who was born in 1926, of Dolly Parton, who was born in 1946, and of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who is a fictional character, but whose birthday on January 19th is well-documented.

Therefore it is the occasion of much revelry in this family.

Join us in toasting Mary, Dolly (and Buffy), won’t you? And lest you forget who wrote this song, here’s an appropriate song by Dolly to start your day.

Sometimes nothin’ can be a real cool hand.*

I am looking forward to some good Lenten movie viewing! Are you? In the past we have watched a combination of straightforward religious films such as:

The Robe (1953)

Franco Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth (1977)

Jesus-of-Nazareth-film

and, of course, Ben Hur (1959) on Good Friday/Holy Saturday.

We also watch movies with a general theme of sacrifice, such as:

Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Chariots of Fire (1981)

Chariots-of-FIre

Shane (1953)

and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

I have been trying to come up with some new ideas: Sling Blade (1996)?

slingblade

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982)?

Buffy, season 5?

This is harder than you think. Just google “films about sacrifice” and see what you get! Titanic! And, no, you will not find me watching Son of God (2014) with the “hot” Jesus, put together by those people responsible for the unwatchable “The Bible” TV miniseries.

Happy birthday, Susiebelle*!

Sunday is daughter #2’s 23rd birthday. So today we wish her a Hipy Papy Bthuthdy!

“Can you read, Pooh?” Owl asked a little anxiously, and this is what he wrote:
HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY.
Pooh looked on admiringly.
“I’m just saying `A Happy Birthday’,” said Owl carelessly.
“It’s a nice long one,” said Pooh, very much impressed.
“Well, actually, of course, I’m saying `A Very Happy Birthday with Love from Pooh’. Naturally it takes a good deal of pencil to say a long thing like that.”

(In Which Eeyore has a Birthday and Gets Two Presents)

I’m just saying.

MissSue

This is my favorite picture of daughter #2 from back in the days when her role model was Stephanie Judith Tanner and she was writing a novel called “A Man from Melville”. Probably because she had two active and outspoken older siblings and had endured years of endless teasing, the Belle was always good at entertaining herself. She was so adept at shrugging it all off and going to her room where she could spend hours working on craft projects and reading Christian romance novels. She’s come a long way since then, but thankfully she is still the same old girl with the sunny, forgiving, glass-is-half-full personality.

I have mentioned before that, although as parents we look back nostalgically at our children’s childhoods and we miss “those days” (and our youth), it is truly wonderful when they turn out to be great adults. We appreciate and love them on a whole new level. And it is true that people who have a sunny, forgiving and generally positive attitude toward life are frequently not appreciated for their depth. In daughter #2’s case, this is a big mistake.

Who else but the Belle could have persuaded me to read Moby-Dick?

“Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure. Consider also the devilish brilliance and beauty of many of its most remorseless tribes, as the dainty embellished shape of many species of sharks. Consider, once more, the universal cannibalism of the sea; all whose creatures prey upon each other, carrying on eternal war since the world began.

Consider all this; and then turn to the green, gentle, and most docile earth; consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself? For as this appalling ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy, but encompassed by all the horrors of the half-known life. God keep thee! Push not off from that isle, thou canst never return!”

― Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Happy birthday and God keep thee!

*A birthday shout out to our girl Sarah Michelle Gellar as well!

Buffy-Sarah-Michelle-Gellar

Sarah was born on April 14, 1977. As our loyal readers know, her alter-ego, Buffy Summers, shares a birthday with our mother. We consider her kin.

Happy birthday, Mary and Dolly (and Buffy)

by chuckofish

You may recall that tomorrow (January 19) is the birthday of my mother and also of Dolly Parton (and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). I blogged about this last year. I won’t repeat myself, but I thought I’d post a picture of Mary when she was a wistful and athletic college student at Middlebury.

…and a picture of Dolly “in the good old days”.

“But there’s a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple, and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begin.”
― Mitch Albom, For One More Day

Happy birthday, ladies!

Fa la la la lala la la

Well, in our part of the Midwest we haven’t had any snow to speak of. Just a lot of gray skies.

We spent yesterday at the hospital with daughter #2 who was having some ear tube maintenance surgery.

hospittal

It was a long, but thankfully uneventful day. Daughter #1 had fun entertaining herself with iPhone antics and tweets.

We were glad to go home after 4 hours, stopping at McDonald’s for Diet Cokes and Nuggets (don’t judge us). Later we went to get a prescription filled and to Walgreen’s for NyQuil and throat lozenges. I made hash with the pork tenderloin leftover from Christmas. Daughter #1 made cookies. We watched several episodes of Buffy, including one of our favorites (“Band Candy”) wherein our she-ro made an amusing reference to Nightline. (We live for such moments.)

That was our day. Sigh.

A gratuitous Buffy post

Because she’s awesome. And because I can, that’s why!

Five words or less

by chuckofish

Buffy Summers: What are you doing here? Five words or less.
Spike: [pause] Out. For. A. Walk… Bitch.

Bottom line

by chuckofish

Bottom line is, even if you see them coming, you’re not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So, what are we, helpless? Puppets? Nah. The big moments are gonna come, you can’t help that. It’s what you do afterwards that counts. That’s when you find out who you are.

(Whistler, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 2)

Hello to the imagery

by chuckofish

Buffy: If you have information worth hearing, then I am grateful for it. If you’re gonna crack jokes, then I’m gonna pull out your rib cage and wear it as a hat.

Whistler: Hello to the imagery. Very nice.

Thank God it’s Friday.

Life is stranger than fiction department

by chuckofish

Did you know that although she was not credited by name, one of the executive producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was none other than Dolly Parton? Really. She had a production partnership (called Sandollar Entertainment) with Sandy Gallin, who had managed Dolly’s career. You gotta love it.

I wonder if that is why Buffy has the same birthday as Dolly? That’s January 19 for the uninformed, which, by the way, is also our mother’s birthday. Sometimes life just really makes perfect sense.
