Let freedom ring

by chuckofish

We had a lot of rain early on July 4th, but the sun came out and “America’s Birthday Parade” went forward although there were not a whole lot of people in downtown St. Louis. I watched from home.

Daughter #1 and Mr. Smith and the boy and his family came over in the afternoon and we celebrated in our traditional way.

Why mess with a good thing? Daughter #2 and her family celebrated with their own backyard BBQ along with some new friends. The prairie girls were dressed appropriately!

The local town fireworks display was postponed until tonight because of dire weather predictions (note the blue, nearly cloudless sky in above photos), so we’ll probably go over to our usual spot in the high school parking lot to watch. But I have to say there were a lot of local, unofficial firework displays in our own neighborhood last night. More than I remember in previous years.

Well, I’ll wrap up with some wise words from Calvin Coolidge:

About the Declaration [of Independence] there is a finality that is exceedingly restful. It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning can not be applied to this great charter. If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.

–President Calvin Coolidge, from a speech given on the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1926

“Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!”*

by chuckofish

It’s our nation’s birthday. So celebrate appropriately. Drink a beer…

…watch a parade…

…or a baseball game…

…or a John Wayne movie…

…or some movie that demonstrates how, yes, Americans are exceptional…

…wear red, white and blue…

…get out into the Great Outdoors even if it is just sitting on your patio drinking that Yuengling! Smell the pine in your nostrils!

And, by God, be thankful you live in this country. (As the Madcaps say, “You could be living in Venezuela!”)

*Frances Scott Key

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto – “In God is our trust,”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Almighty God, Who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners.

Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues.

Endow with Thy spirit of wisdom those to whom in Thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth.

In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. (1928 BCP)

I hope you all had an uplifting Fourth of July and that you were able to celebrate with family and friends. We had the gang over for a barbecue and then we headed to the Kirkwood High School parking lot where we set up camp for the local fireworks display and waited for sundown.

We agreed that the display was not as good as the one in Jeff City, but the company was stellar and the boy had stocked the cooler in his truck with bevvies.

The wee laddie immediately made friends with the family in the next car over and was ready to depart with them at the close of the show, once again earning his title as the Friendliest Boy in Town.

By the way, he also won the prize for the best shooter in his age group at lacrosse camp last week, rocketing shots at 17 miles an hour. His father was pleased and proud. Not bad for our 30-pound (when wet) 5-year old wonder boy.

He has also advanced to off-roading in the Power Wheels Raptor.

Lottie, who is too timid to drive, is nevertheless a terrific backseat driver, as you can see. (“Slow down! Cramp it! Stop!”)

Meanwhile I have caught up with my Bible reading, on which I had fallen embarrassingly behind during my vacation. Phew. I am halfway through the year and halfway through the Bible.

I am really enjoying it and highly recommend it as a daily habit.

We all growl like bears,
And moan sadly like doves;
We look for justice, but there is none;
For salvation, but it is far from us.

Isaiah 59:11

Well, here are a few links to read if you feel like it.

I hear you. “I have been delighted to discover that the closer I draw to God, the less I want of the world.”

Don’t be a Jellyfish Christian. “Mark what I say. If you want to do good in these times, you must throw aside indecision, and take up a distinct, sharply-cut, doctrinal religion. . . . The victories of Christianity, wherever they have been won, have been won by distinct doctrinal theology; by telling men roundly of Christ’s vicarious death and sacrifice; by showing them Christ’s substitution on the cross, and his precious blood; by teaching them justification by faith, and bidding them believe on a crucified Savior; by preaching ruin by sin, redemption by Christ, regeneration by the Spirit; by lifting up the brazen serpent; by telling men to look and live — to believe, repent, and be converted.” (J.C. Ryle, Holiness, 328)

This is excellent.

Postcards from mid-MO

by chuckofish

The OM and I drove over to Jeff City to visit daughter #1 for the 4th of July. The weather was hot, but not overbearingly so. We were able to visit our favorite winery in Rocheport and sit outside and enjoy the river views.

We did a little “vintiquing” and checked out the the city’s downtown festival district.  The next day the boy and his little famille joined us and the pace of our adventures picked up 100%.

We walked over to the capitol and visited “Aunt Mary’s” office and ran amok through the building, which was okay, since there were very few people there. It is indeed a very neat space full of fascinating things.

Love those N.C. Wyeth murals!

It was fun to introduce the small fry to Missouri history, flora and fauna. And we went on a bear hunt through the halls, looking for all the ubiquitous ursi…

That evening we walked with our folding chairs over to the House parking garage where daughter #1 had staked out a parking place on the top floor where we set up for viewing the fireworks. We had a perfect view of the huge and impressive display on the river. It seemed like a long walk home after that, but we made it.

We went home the next day and recovered.

Happy 4th of July holiday! I hope everybody celebrated appropriately yesterday, i.e. in noisy American fashion. We went down to Jefferson City and celebrated in the state capitol with daughter #1 and the boy and his family. I’ll have more on that tomorrow.

Anyway, I forgot to mention that last Thursday was the anniversary of daughter #2 and DN. Mea clupa.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_8885-1.jpg

I had retirement on my mind, but when reminded, it was nice to remember that lovely summer day back in 2017 when these two lovebirds tied the knot.

Now, of course, there is little Katiebelle to celebrate as well. What a big, strong, happy girl she is!

Which brings me to this interesting article, which sums up pretty well how I have been feeling about our current content-creating culture. “Have we lost the ability to simply experience the goodness of life because we have become so obsessed with documenting and sharing it?” You may have noticed that daughter #2 did not post a baby update last week. We talked about it and both agreed we needed to back off. Katie deserves her privacy. This is a topic that everyone needs to think seriously about. “Let’s just be present. Let’s just experience life and not be so concerned about documenting it. We don’t need to be our own biographers. We don’t need to build our own brands.” We will continue to blog about our quite ordinary lives, but we will focus more on poetry and history and genealogy and movies and other things that interest us.

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness,
and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us all be thankful for our many blessings!

Three-day weekend! Some people say the weekend doesn’t mean much since we are home all the time anyway, but I disagree. On the weekend, I am not chained to my laptop or to the feeling that I should be “doing” something. No sir.

Since there is pretty much nothing going on in our flyover city this 4th of July weekend and the boy and his wee family are going to be at the lake, the OM and I have opted to fly the coop and head to mid-MO to visit daughter #1 in our state capitol. We will probably not join the hoards that may gather to celebrate, but we can watch out her apartment window. And there will be fireworks on the Missouri River.

We will raise a toast to our big brother whose birthday is on the 4th of July.

Yippee-ki-yay, pardner!

The wee babes were going to come over to frolic on Thursday morning, but the wee laddie fell off the deck at their house on Wednesday night and had to go to the doctor to get checked out in the morning, so I had Lottiebelle all by herself. We had a fun time playing. She is truly the queen of imaginary play and I find that if I just give a funny voice to any and all stuffed animals I am hilarious.

After the wee laddie was given a clean bill of health–he was fine, no broken bones–and they picked up Lottie and all went home, I went back to my Zoom meetings (and using a normal voice). Life is pretty strange. I try to go with the flow.

I want to give a shout out to TCM, which has quite a good line-up of movies in July. Tony Curtis is the Star of the Month (my DP will not want to miss Captain Newman, M.D. on July 13!) and John Ford movies are on the schedule every Friday. Today is a particularly good day!

I will also note that I just watched Logan Lucky (2017) again (on Prime) and I have to say, I really like this movie.

It has a smart script and a great cast: Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Riley Keough, Hilary Swank, and others you will recognize in smaller roles. It is rated PG-13 for Pete’s sake. The Hillbillies win. What’s not to like?

And this cartoon from Liz Climo is my life at the moment.

Let me say, this is just too perfect. (PS I’m the bunny. I live with the bear.)

Enjoy the weekend! Let your freak flag fly. God bless America!

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave

by chuckofish

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July and are enjoying a day off today. The wee babes came over and ran us ragged.Screen Shot 2019-07-05 at 6.08.20 AM.pngIMG_0002.jpegWe went through our repertoire pretty fast and had to bring out the big guns, i.e. our vintage copy of Cars and Trucks and Things That Go, which is the wee laddie’s absolute favorite.IMG_0273.jpegWe also brought out the Big Box of Beanie Babies and, boy, was that ever popular. We went through it identifying each and every Beanie Baby. They have amazing recall. Then the wee babes enjoyed getting in and out of the box themselves. IMG_0254.jpegThey also had fun running wild in our yard. The energy of these wee babes is impressive.IMG_0243.jpegBy the time it was time to watch fireworks, they were finally pretty done in, so they went home and we collapsed.

Today daughter #1 and I will be taking it easy. Second round of chemo…and then home again, home again jiggety jig.

Also, note that every Friday in July TCM will show an all-day marathon of movies from the “Golden Year 1939”. Today’s movies are:

Tomorrow is the 4th of July–let’s whoop it up some!

In the morning TCM is playing some great John Wayne movies…

…and that night they’re showing some appropriate musicals…

Screen Shot 2019-07-02 at 8.14.38 PM.pngSet that DVR!

We will probably be taking it pretty easy here in our flyover neighborhood. We won’t be attending Fair St. Louis or anything big like that. (We’ll watch the parade on TV.) But the OM will fire up the barbecue and the wee babes will come over for awhile. (They have new outfits.)

IMG_0205.JPGIMG_0206.JPG

We’ll dig out the sparklers and bang some pots and pans. Maybe we’ll play some patriotic music…

Screen Shot 2019-07-02 at 8.11.48 PM.png

And let’s all say a prayer:

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect for Independence Day, BCP)

There are a lot of movies with 4th of July scenes, but lists almost always forget the classic finale of McClintock! (1963) wherein John Wayne spanks Maureen O’Hara and everyone cheers. Here’s another great scene featuring our quintessential American hero.

Have a good one. Make good choices.

Well, the 4th of July went by in a rush of activity and an overload of fun. Phew.

IMG_7808.jpeg

It was hot, hot, hot in flyover country, but we braved the asphalt of the high school parking lot in our folding chairs and watched the fireworks which were “the best ever!” The wee babes by that time were pretty subdued and exhausted–after a Shania Twain dance party–and watched without complaint.

Cousin Tim and Abbie, who were a big hit with the wee babes (especially Lottie),

IMG_7804.jpegare heading back to Indiana this morning and it is back to the salt mine pour moi. I hope it is a quiet day!

Screen Shot 2018-07-03 at 8.54.10 AM.pngHowever you want to spend the 4th of July, I’ll take my cue from those three American flyers in the German prisoner of war camp (surrounded by British officers) in The Great Escape (1962)…waving the flag, playing loud music and sipping some moonshine. (“WOW!”)

(Francis Scott Key)

A little flag-waving once a year is a good thing! You can bet that we’ll be waving away and bar-b-que-ing and then heading over to our local high school to watch the local fireworks.

We’ll also be thinking of our handsome big brother and thinking of those 4th of July birthdays of yesteryear. We were a rather quiet and restrained family (some might say uptight) but on the 4th of July we liked to let loose and bang pots and pans. We would put the stereo speakers in the open window and blast Souza marches to unsuspecting, left-wing neighbors. We set off fire crackers and bottle rockets!

Well, here’s hoping our bro has a happy, happy birthday and that it isn’t too staid and dignified!

Screen Shot 2018-04-26 at 10.17.24 AM.pngWe hope this is a “big year” for him, at least in the birding sense. Come see a Pied-billed grebe or a Marbled godwit sometime! We have them in Missouri, you know. After all, we live on the Mississippi flyway.
