“See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God”*

On Friday I forgot to wish daughter #2 a happy birthday–which was on Saturday. She is coming home on Thursday to celebrate both our birthdays next weekend, so I am focused on that, and so I forgot! Mea culpa. Love you a lot.

Screen Shot 2018-04-15 at 7.48.33 PM.pngMy weekend was a good one, full of good friends, good estate sales and good old movies, including the politically incorrect, but hilarious, Gunga Din (1939)–continuing my Cary Grant thread.

Screen Shot 2018-04-15 at 2.57.15 PM.pngI read the first lesson at church, a great section from Acts, ending with Peter’s exhortation to “Repent therefore, and turn to God“–I mean how many times a day do you get to say that? (Not nearly enough, although I frequently wish I could.)

On the other hand, the second reader got every other word wrong and stumbled through the entire thing. Carla and I promised to tell each other, when the time comes, that we need to stop reading. Sigh.

The OM and I dined at Steak ‘N Shake on Saturday and hosted the wee babes and their parents on Sunday night. The babes ate spaghetti and peanut butter and jelly and were happy campers.

I was sorry to hear about Barbara Bush, who is my mother’s age. I’m with Nikki Haley.

Much ado about nothing

by chuckofish

Friday again and another week has skated by.

My buddies are coming over after work today to have a drink and open the Florida room for business. It’s about time it warmed up enough to do so!

I will toast Eudora Welty (1909–2001) whose birthday is today.

“The events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their own order, a timetable not necessarily–perhaps not possibly–chronological. The time as we know it subjectively is often the chronology that stories and novels follow: it is the continuous thread of revelation.” (One Writer’s Beginnings)

Then I plan to spend the weekend doing what I like to do. I will read/look at some of the books I bought last weekend at the estate sale in Elsah.

Screen Shot 2018-04-12 at 8.52.29 AM.png

There are also lots more vintage New Yorker magazines to plow through.

NYER-3.jpeg

This past week I watched two very vintage Cary Grant movies (His Girl Friday and My Favorite Wife) and I see more of that genre in my weekend. Old Cary is good for what ails you, for sure.

And, by the way, the wee lassie has stepped out in faith and is walking! Look, Ma, no hands! You go, girl! Of course, this means we will be chasing both of them around now! C’est la vie!

Don’t look so innocent!

I’m not sure where my DP is in her travels, but hopefully we will hear from her soon. Have a great weekend!

Screen Shot 2018-04-05 at 10.32.34 AM.pngI am looking forward to a relatively quiet weekend with not much on the radar. I hope to catch up with some “desk work” and puttering, which I have been too busy to do lately. If it is cold and snowy, all the better.

I am going to continue to peruse my New Yorker magazines from 1947-48…

Unknown.jpeg

…and I’m going to read/listen to some more sermons by the Rev. Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NYC.

“The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.”

He is really good. Listen to his sermons here.

The wee babes are coming over on Sunday for dinner, God willing and the creek don’t rise.

In the meantime, here’s another 1947 vintage cartoon that made me smile.

It was a busy Saturday, but daughter #1 and I still managed to go out to breakfast and hit a couple of estate sales prior to the festivities.

We also watched two great movies over the weekend: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966)

russians.jpeg

which is a really funny movie. The screenplay is hilarious; it was even nominated for an  Oscar. The movie was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Film Editing. If you have not seen it lately, treat yourself. Jonathan Winters repeatedly saying, “We have… GOT… to get organized!” is worth the price of admission alone. Also, I think I am becoming Muriel Everett.

Screen Shot 2018-03-25 at 5.26.15 PM.png

The other movie we watched was The Quiet Man (1952)–the classic John Ford/John Wayne fantasy about Ireland–also very enjoyable.

thequietman_1952_mp_1sht_1200_081320100249.jpg

As usual this poster shows a lot more cleavage/bosom than ever would have been appropriate in the actual film. Zut alors!

We went to the Palm Sunday service at Grace.

IMG_3137.JPG

All went well with the Passion story as read by the lay reader stars. I was the Narrator again, which I enjoyed. But, you know, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” (I Cor. 1:31)

Afterwards we went over to see the wee babes at their house before daughter #1 had to hit the road and head home to Mid-MO. It is always a joy to see the wee babes in their natural habitat.

And now it is back to the salt mine. Let’s try to keep our focus where it belongs during Holy Week!

Restore thou those who are penitent*

by chuckofish

It was a busy weekend filled with chores–going to Target and other shopping, doing laundry, cleaning up the kitchen, vacuuming–the usual weekend to do list. I don’t mind. I got some of my bunnies out since it is that time of year.

IMG_3106

And I did a little spring cleaning in the Florida room, but I may have jumped the gun on that.

I went to church on Sunday and I was the first lector. My passage was from Numbers, the classic scene where the Israelites are grumbling–“Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?”–and the Lord punishes them by sending poisonous snakes. They repent and He takes the snakes away. This leads nicely into the gospel lesson, “Jesus said, ‘Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted  up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world…”.

It was raining when I left the church and soon it was snowing, really coming down like soap flakes in a movie. It was pretty to watch.

IMG_3103

iPhone cameras can never capture snow falling! It was coming down in giant chunks!

IMG_3105

I also started to pack for my trip this coming Friday to visit sweet daughter #2 back east. We have a little road trip planned to Virginia where we will stop in for a few days to see my oldest/dearest friend who lives in Norfolk. Can’t wait to get out of Dodge!

Meanwhile the boy’s BFF (and the wee laddie’s godfather) was ordained to the diaconate at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC.

imagejpeg_0We are all very proud of him.

Ah, sunrise, sunset…swiftly flow the years!

Speaking  of which, the wee babes are now 15-months old! They came over for dinner on Sunday night. They had fun playing with vintage toys.

Were you…out there?

I enjoyed it immensely.

Rest and be thankful

by chuckofish

I am so glad it is Friday and that the weekend is just around the corner. I plan to take it easy.

IMG_1011

I’m going to clean up my kitchen after having some work done in there this week. And I’m going to start thinking about my trip east next weekend to see daughter #2.  Maybe I’ll even pack!

I’m looking forward to seeing the wee babes.

IMG_1009IMG_1006

It is rumored that the sun may be out this weekend, at least partially, so I’m hoping to get outside and survey the south forty.

And, by the way, Sunday is Johnny Appleseed Day.

“Oooooh, the Lord is good to me, and so I thank the Lord, for giving me the things I need, the sun and the rain and the appleseed. The Lord is good to me.”

Wise words to ponder as are today’s Daily Bible Verse.

“Shut up and kiss me”*

by chuckofish

Quelle fun weekend! The weather was beautiful. Daughter #1 came into town on Saturday and we went to a couple of estate sales, had margaritas with our lunch, shopped locally, took a long walk around town, and tried to get the wee babes interested in a dance party when they came over that night.

IMG_2961.jpeg

The wee babes were having none of it though, preferring to cruise around on their own–the wee laddie toddling on two feet

IMG_2962.jpeg

and the wee lassie careening around on all fours.

IMG_2960.jpeg

She is fast!

Daughter #1 headed off to DePauw in the morning. Her cousin Tim and longtime girlfriend Abby drove down from Crawfordsville, Indiana to meet her and go to Marvin’s, a Greencastle landmark.

IMG_2812.JPG

I caught up with daughter #2 on the phone and then the OM surprised me by wanting to do something. We decided to go to Lone Elk Park, which was always a fun Sunday drive when our kids were little. Of course, it has been awhile and the OM got lost (several times) getting there, but we made it eventually. We saw some big ol’ elk and a little herd of buffalo.

IMG_3099.JPG

IMG_3100.JPG

Don’t worry–we did not get out of the car and try to take selfies with the buffs. (Pardon my iPhone photos taken through the window.)

I skipped church to have breakfast with daughter #1 before she left Sunday morning, but I did watch most of Billy Graham’s funeral. I was especially struck by his three daughters’ eulogies, especially Anne’s (below at 1:24:17).

Wow. Of course, there was a piper at the end.

And if anyone is wondering which movie I chose to watch on Sunday night instead of the Oscars, it was The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938).

Screen Shot 2018-03-04 at 7.17.11 PM.png

Excellent choice. Best direction, best script, best use of technicolor, best star, best supporting cast, best choreographed swordplay, best stunts, best music, best everything! And the movie is 80 years old! Zut alors!

Have a great week!

The weather wizards are promising some sun today and tomorrow. We shall see.

Daughter #1 is stopping in this weekend on her way to her alma mater in Indiana where she is speaking on a panel about her career in media. Then she’ll stop on her way back to Mid-MO.

Meanwhile daughter #3 has moved out everything in their 2nd bedroom and created a playroom for the wee babes. It looks pretty cool.

“Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”*

by chuckofish

After raining all week, it rained all day Saturday and our front yard was literally a lake. On Sunday morning, however, a great bright orb appeared in the sky, and proceeded to dry everything up. It was nice to see the sun after such a long time. Of course, there are now signs of spring everywhere.

IMG_3097.JPG

But we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves.

I re-read The Last Kind Words Saloon by Larry McMurtry. It is a very short novell(a) about Charles Goodnight, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday, Buffalo Bill, various women and Indians. McMurtry is long past his Lonesome Dove powers, but there is something about his books that soothes my soul. When I finished that, I started Goodbye My Lovely by my hero, Raymond Chandler. I have a whole pile of current novels to read, but I just can’t seem to want to read them.

IMG_3094.JPG

A couple of weeks ago, I gave my Valentine the DVD set of the three Godfather movies, because it had occurred to me that I had never actually seen The Godfather (1972) in its entirety. We watched it Saturday night. I remember when my parents went to see it. (I was deemed too young.) They didn’t love it, but they were somewhat impressed I think. It was new and different and shocking for the time.

Screen Shot 2018-02-25 at 11.50.13 AM.png

It holds up after all these years, but I can’t say I loved it or anything. I guess I just do not understand gangster movies or their appeal. They are about criminals, violent sick criminals. With whom am I supposed to identify? Much less care about? The OM says their appeal has to do with people’s vicarious desire to kill/do violence to their enemies without consequences. Really? Yikes. And why did Marlon Brando win an Oscar for that role? If anyone deserved an Oscar it was Al Pacino who was the center of the film. He is really good–you can follow the arc of his character, how he changes, how his eyes deaden, how he becomes a criminal. [According to IMDB, Pacino did not attend the Oscar ceremony in protest of perceived category fraud. As his performance reflected greater screen time than that of his co-star Marlon Brando, Pacino believed he should have received a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Well, welcome to Hollywood, Al. You were robbed.] The movie has a very good cast–James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton. Well, now I’ve seen it.

I went to church on Sunday–rite I for Lent–and enjoyed the service except for an overabundance of virtue-signaling in the sermon by our associate rector. Saints preserve me. The ushers were also annoyingly loud out in the narthex during the sermon, and I was seriously contemplating going out to tell them to please shut the heck up, but was saved from having to do so when my friend Carla got up and went and did it first! You go, girl. We all know that guys want to usher so they don’t have to sit through the service, but gabbing in the narthex is not okay.

While I was sitting in church during this penitential season, I couldn’t help but think some more about The Godfather, especially the sickening baptism scene, the climax of the film. You remember: while the baptism of Michael Corleone’s goddaughter is being enacted in some ornate Catholic church, the elaborate murders of the heads of the five New York mafia families are  simultaneously going on, orchestrated by Michael.  In essence, he is being baptized twice: once as he renews his own baptismal vows, and secondly as he is “baptized” into organized crime as the new don.

This is all very well and brilliant film-making, blah, blah, blah, oh the irony. But no thank you. Just not my cup of tea I guess.

When I got home from church, I convinced the OM to take a drive down to Ted Drewes–our first of the year.

IMG_3095.JPG

My mocha concrete hit the spot. The OM did a little advertising for the boy.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I spent quite some time washing some more 30-year old toys I unearthed, but sadly, the wee babes didn’t come over as planned–sad face–so I don’t have any cute pictures. C’est la vie. We roll with the punches.

So it’s back to the salt mine today. Have a good Monday.

It has been a gray, gloomy week and there seems to be more of the same in store for us in flyover country. Everyone says we need the rain and that is surely true, but, gee, a glimpse of the sun would be quite welcome.

This weekend I plan to hunker down and do some work around the old manse.

I think I will get out my unfinished needlepoint projects and choose one to work on.

Then I may catch up on John Crist videos. This was funny:

Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 10.37.31 AM.png

Nice to know there are kids over-dosing on John Crist videos and not heroin. Speaking of obsessed, the wee babes are very into the Spirit Netflix show.

IMG_2594.JPG

Especially little Lottie.IMG_2599.jpegAnyway, if you have young children, you might want to check out this show on Netflix. I hear it is awesome.

It’s a whole thing. We even gave Lottie the Spirit plush toy for Valentine’s Day.

Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 4.43.58 PM.png

Well…hopefully, they can tear themselves away long enough to come over to our house on Sunday for dinner.

Happy Friday!
