The Games of the III Olympiad

by chuckofish

That’s right–the third Olympiad. Lest we forget–the 1904 Olympics were held here in my flyover town.

And that is pretty cool. We are, after all, one of only three cities in the U.S. — one of only 23 in the world — to host the Summer Games. And, of course, my flyover university–where most events of the third Olympiad took place–is going to “add another architectural jewel to its historic campus later this year when an Olympic Rings ‘Spectacular,’ a five-ring sculpture, is installed at the end of Olympian Way, on the southwest corner of the Danforth Campus.” Oh boy.

But why did they ever get rid of the tug-of-war?

Well, things haven’t changed that much on campus. Still a lot of pink granite and ramparts.

Here’s an article about the “St. Louis’ Olympic legacy” with a lot of pictures.

By the way, did you notice that lacrosse was one of the team events in 1904? Speaking of lacrosse, here’s the boy’s latest video featuring D2 Lindenwood University’s team.

(That was a smooth segue, right?) Still pretty chilly for lacrosse.

This and that

Well, did you hear that Curtis Hanson died? This makes me sad, because he was one of the few directors who made movies that I have actually admired in the last twenty years. Seriously, there are so few. But I liked L.A. Confidential (1997), Wonder Boys (2000), In Her Shoes (2005), and Lucky You (2006). And I am a big fan of 8 Mile (2002)

which starred Eminem, who said, “Curtis Hanson believed in me and our crazy idea to make a rap battle movie set in Detroit. He basically made me into an actor for ‘8 Mile.’ I’m lucky I got to know him.”

So tonight I will toast Curtis Hanson and this weekend I will try to watch one of his movies.

In other news, while the world goes to hell in a hand-basket, my flyover town is all in a tizzy about the new “improved” mascot of the local Jesuit university.

I hear that the Billiken’s new look is a hot topic in the twitter-sphere.

Anyway, I found this whole kerfuffle amusing.

Meanwhile the Cards are still in the race for the wild card spot. And we have the best mascot ever.

God’s grace abounds.

GARY-UNGER

My dual personality and her best friend Lars were huge fans of the St. Louis Blues hockey team back in the 1970s. I was never a big ice hockey fan, but I seem to remember them really liking Garry Unger and his flowing blond locks in particular.

While I was perusing the internet for the above pic of Garry, I was reminded of these great guys of yore…remember Red Berenson?

There’s nothing like a skate down memory lane, right?

Meanwhile the current Blues are headed to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2001.
