If all goes well today, and barring any travel mishaps, everyone should be home tonight! The wee babes are coming over and we are babysitting while their parents go to a party. They will get their first look at White Christmas (1954) and can start storing that great dialogue away for future reference.

A momentous occasion to be sure!

We do not expect to have a white Christmas ourselves…

Screen Shot 2017-12-21 at 9.04.03 AM.png

…but that’s okay with me. Maybe there will be a little “mood snow” as our favorite meteorologist Dave Murray calls it…

Meanwhile…

I’ll toast y’all tonight!

O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel ; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP)

I watched A Charlie Brown Christmas last night, so now I am ready for Christmas.

I’m sure I have not missed it in 51 years.

Screen Shot 2017-12-20 at 10.33.29 AM.pngI have to say, I am not feeling stressed (knock on wood). I am going to try to take it easy and float downstream.

Here are a few things from the internet.

This short interview with Jean-Claude Van Damme is great.  I use a paper planner too:

This calendar has weekly scripture quotes: “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.” (Lamentations 3:25)…and all the Jewish holidays!

(I watched the first three episodes of Jean Claude Van Johnson on Amazon. I chuckled throughout. Good to see JCVD back in the saddle and able to laugh at himself.)

And I think I need one of these hats:

I like that–“Antique Archaeology”.

Not yet, but I don’t want to rush Christmas!

Take it easy.

We’re in the home stretch now!

Unknown-1.jpeg

I had the house pretty well cleaned up this weekend. Then the wee babes came over on Sunday night. The wee laddie likes to eat and blow raspberries at the same time, expressing whatever food is in his mouth all over the place! It is a neat trick and c’est la vie. The Christmas creche is fair game as well.

Unknown.png

Although everything he sees goes into his mouth, he is so active he seems to burn off any and all calories. Case in point: the wee laddie climbed all the way up our stairs to the second floor.

Unknown-2.pngUnknown-1.png

Talk about Mt. Crumpit! I wish I had the core strength of our 16 lb. dynamo.

Little Lottiebelle takes a more measured approach to things. She is unimpressed by her brother’s antics and accomplishments.

Unknown-5

Stairs? No way, José!

And I hear the wee babes went to see a certain jolly old elf…

They’re not afraid…

Well, this week I will wind things up at work and finish my to-do list and await the arrival of daughter #2 and Nate and daughter #1 on Friday. Woohoo!

P.S. I know you are impressed with my ability to screenshot Snapchat videos, right? I impress myself sometimes.

Have a holly jolly weekend

by chuckofish

Another busy week gone with the wind. Good grief, where does the time go? I’m not sure, but my routine has been disrupted by holiday office parties on school nights (!) and similar activities. I’m certainly not complaining. ‘Tis the season and all that.

Our weekend should be relatively calm. I will continue at a leisurely pace to wrap presents and write cards. Daughter #1 is coming home to help us trim our big tree. Hopefully the wee babes and their parents will come over for dinner on Sunday.

Unknown-4.jpegLottie is on the verge of crawling.

This time last year we were very worried about the wee babes who were only a few days old and so tiny.

Screen Shot 2016-12-13 at 10.03.15 AM.png

We were at the NICU every day then and on that Friday daughter #2 and I were caught going home in a freak ice storm that wrecked havoc with traffic for hours. How blessed we are to have gotten through that time and to have our darling babes happy and healthy and ready for their first real Christmas. I reminded someone yesterday that we had many people and churches of varying denominations praying for those babies back then, and we are very grateful. The power of prayer is a real thing.

Rejoice always,  pray without ceasing,  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (I Thess: 6:16-18)

As it is Friday,  I want to point out to you that TCM is airing a lot of Christmas movies in the coming days, including tonight:

Set your DVR for some seasonal fun. BTW, The Shop Around the Corner (1940) is the movie upon which You’ve Got Mail (1998) is based. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan–check out the original.

Just a reminder

by chuckofish

4aa1642d27c30f68d9fdff0b7b5d90a6.jpg
Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat.
But how about the children, have you taken thought of that?
What about the little boy that lives down the lane,
Ragged in the snowstorm, whistling in the rain?
What about the little girl the other side of town?
There’s no one she can run to, and her world is falling down.
Dead father, drunken father, father gone away,
Sick mother, no mother, think of them today.
These are the lost ones, little ones alone.
These too are Maryland, these are our own.
Christmas is coming, and shall they be dismayed?
Send a Merry Christmas check to the Children’s Aid.

–Ogden Nash, a former president and longtime board member of the Children’s Aid Society of Maryland, wrote this poem in 1942.

Well, this is just a humble reminder that we should all think of others at this time of year and not just ourselves and our own loved ones. It is easy to get carried away with all the hoopla, isn’t it?

One of the charities I support is the Episcopal City Mission, which was started back in 1894 when Charles Holmes, a lay person at Christ Church Cathedral here in my flyover town, organized volunteers from the cathedral to minister at City Hospital, the City Jail, the City Workhouse, and the Asylum. Thus was born the House Missions, which was known under various names until it became Episcopal City Mission in the 1950’s. With the establishment of juvenile facilities in the city, the ministry grew to include pastoral care for children.

Eventually, other Protestant denominations joined in this important ministry to those confined in the public institutions of St. Louis.  In 1953 the decision was made to divide the ministry to these institutions among various denominations. The Episcopal Diocese chose to work with troubled youth and asked to continue the ministry to children in detention under the name of Episcopal City Mission (ECM). Its ministry to youth was firmly established in the Juvenile Detention Centers and recognized by the Family Court System. ECM became the agency authorized by the Court System to provide for the ongoing spiritual needs of detained children in St. Louis City and County.

Small world department: The chaplain on the right was a youth leader when the boy was active in K-Life back in middle school. He has definitely stepped up. Good to see him still walking the walk.

Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“You don’t know how it feels to be me”*

by chuckofish

‘Tis the season when we all need to take a chill pill and go easy on people. Everyone is stressed out. My DP had some good holiday advice a few days ago and here are a few more things to keep in mind.

First of all, try not to think of all this yuletide preparation as a burden. If it is a burden, you have put it on yourself. Personally, I love getting ready for Christmas, especially the unpacking of the ornaments and decorations, the new and the old. For me, it is a gradual process. There are no deadlines. If something doesn’t get put up this year, so be it. No one will care or (probably) notice. And it will all be lovely.

If no one invites you to a party, have your own. We don’t have a lot of friends, but those we have will all be coming over to our house on the Saturday before Christmas, and I’m sure they are happy about that. We can get dressed up and twist the night away…at least until 8:30 p.m. when we all turn into pumpkins!

oldfolks.jpg

Put money in the Salvation Army red kettle every time you see one! Have your cash ready. Don’t view those bell-ringing Santas as an annoyance. The money goes to a good cause.

4edd26755c610.image_.jpg

Watch some Christmas movies! For me at least, it just wouldn’t be Christmas without The Bishop’s Wife (1947) and White Christmas (1954) and 3 Godfathers (1947)! Unimaginable. If Danny Kaye can’t put you in the holiday spirit, no one can.

Go to church–at least once! Remember that Jesus really is the reason for the season. The rest is all hype and advertising. We are celebrating with a Festival of Lessons and Carols at our church this Sunday evening. Check and see if there is a similar service in your neighborhood. If you can’t actually attend one, listen to the King’s College, Cambridge service which is broadcast live on BBC Radio 4 on December 24. The service is also broadcast on Christmas Day, and at various times on the BBC World Service.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

(John 1: 1-14, KJV)

Have a good weekend! The wee babes (and their parents) have been sick this week. We’ll see them on Saturday when we go to their mom’s graduation–she’s getting her EdD!

P.S. I  had to include this photo which was posted on Facebook by my friend Carla. It is a Christmas greeting from Christ the Redeemer Church in Pelham, NY where her son is a seminarian intern (3rd from left). The Lord bless you and keep you

…the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

And a happy 2017 to you!

Well, it was a busy week here in flyover country–here are a couple of postcards from my week off with daughters # 1 and 2. We went to Ikea with the boy…

…and sat in front of a roaring fire…

…and had a (semi) rockin’ New Year’s Eve party…

IMG_0145.JPG

I even went to church on New Year’s Day, following our party, because I had traded with another lay reader in a moment of spontaneous generosity. Then when I got there it turned out she had been wrong in the first place and there were three other people all set to read. Well, I stayed, readers, and was okay with it. Starting off the new year at church isn’t a bad idea…

…especially when it is followed by a movie binge-watching New Year’s Day afternoon/evening! We watched Singin’ In the Rain (1952) in memory of Debbie Reynolds,

e3om2obm.5wr.jpg

along with Best In Show (2000), 21 Jump Street, (2012) and Pillow Talk (1959).

Tomorrow it’s back to the salt mines.

Now I just have to take down the trees. Sigh. Have a good last day off!

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?

by chuckofish

I have always liked Patti Smith and I liked this. (If you click through you can watch her beautiful performance at the Nobel Prize ceremony.)

I was born in Chicago on December 30, 1946, within the vortex of a huge snowstorm. My father had to help the taxi-driver navigate Lake Shore Drive with the windows wide open, while my mother was in labor. I was a scrawny baby, and my father worked to keep me alive, holding me over a steamy washtub to help me breathe. I will think of them both when I step on the stage of the Riviera Theatre, in Chicago, on my seventieth birthday, with my band, and my son and daughter.

Ah, scrawny babies. Our grand-babies are coming along, looking better every day, responding to their parents’ steadfast love and devotion. Little girl is over 2 lbs. now and little boy is almost up to 2 lbs. They are gettin’ there.

Screen Shot 2016-12-27 at 6.06.43 PM.pngI was sorry to hear about Carrie Fisher who died yesterday at age 60. A contemporary of mine, she reminded me of a lot of the girls I grew up with. She wasn’t much of an actress–let’s admit it, she was pretty terrible in Star Wars, but she was a funny, funny gal who had been through a lot and kept going. My heartfelt condolences go out to her mother Debbie Reynolds.

Well, I hope you are enjoying this week between Christmas and New Years. I am.

Have a great day!

You’ll be doin’ all right, with your Christmas of white, But I’ll have a blue, blue Christmas

by chuckofish

Today is Blue Christmas, also called the Longest Night in the Western Christian tradition, a day in the Advent season marking the longest night of the year. On this day, some churches hold a church service that honors people who have lost loved ones in that year.

I was unaware of this “tradition,” but it is easy to understand how easy it is for people to get especially sad at this time of year. Those long, dark nights are so depressing and we miss our loved ones. Sigh.

Listening to Elvis sing “Blue Christmas” would make us all feel better, but WordPress would not let me upload video, so you will just have to imagine him singing in your head.

Elvis.jpg

Another way to cheer up is to stare at your tree and look at all the pretty ornaments that you have collected over the years. Sometimes this leads to thinking about how ancient you have become (along with your “vintage” ornaments) but c’est la vie.

IMG_2318.JPG

It may also bring you joy to get busy wrapping all those presents you have gotten for friends and family, because, you know, it is better to give than to receive.

On the other hand, I have given some real flops (or “boners” as we call them) in my day and that is always a depressing reality of Christmas. Expectations are always in the stratosphere around 12/25 and they are bound to be grounded at some point.

Well, try to “think positive” and count your blessings. Daughter #2 is keeping me company and my spirits up at work. And who doesn’t love a poinsettia?

IMG_2317.jpeg

Have a good Wednesday!

Yea, amen! let all adore thee*

by chuckofish

It was a busy week. Daughter #2 came home and between going to work, trips to the NICU at the hospital and an ice storm, we managed to trim the big tree

img_2312

and watch Miracle on 34th Street (1947) and Edward Scissorhands (1990). We even made several fires in the fireplace without the aid of our Eagle Scout who did come and help us wrangle the tree into the tree stand. Merci beaucoup.

img_2311

Daughter #2 graded 29 papers and the OM gassed up the cars.

We went to church yesterday, the fourth Sunday in Advent, and sang the rest of the advent hymns. The rector gave us all high fives for showing up. In fact, a lot of churches were closed because of the weather and very cold temperatures. This is a new thing. On Saturday night you see the names of church closings scrolling on the bottom of your television screen, just like school closings during the week. [Insert eye roll here.] Please.

Today we will go back to work for a few days and visit the hospital and get ready for daughter #1’s arrival on Friday. And we will “rejoice! rejoice!” because, you know, “Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!”

Have a good week and stay calm.
