I think it’s sweet, I have fingers and feet I can wiggle and wag*

Feeling contemplative

Greetings from daughter #2 in Maryland, where the doses of darling will continue even if we are back to our isolated lifestyle. Needless to say, we miss our family and all the extra cuddles (for baby and mommy alike!) terribly. But Katiebelle provides a great example of waking up each morning with a smile on her face, ready to have fun wherever she is. I will try to follow suit!

Katie was a road trip angel, with only a couple of meltdowns — and who can blame her for those? We were in the car for nearly 16 hours. She missed sleeping in her crib and kicking freely! We do have plenty of time for that now, and we have been making the most of it.

Since campus is closed this week and I am off from work, I am trying to get organized but also take a chill pill. Equal parts folding laundry and reading in bed, reorganizing the coat closet and painting my nails. Happy new year to me!

Katie says, Happy new year to you, too!

Well, Daughter #1 here, live from the dining room where my dear mother has just placed a giant bowl of mint M & Ms in front of me. The diet starts tomorrow, as they say.

I hope you all had wonderful Christmases. We certainly did. I received many lovely gifts from a framed antique sampler to a George Caleb Bingham print, to a new tote bag, a miniature garden stool, and a new sleep shirt among many others. But let’s be real, the star of the show is in the photo below. I can’t wait until we are allowed to use reusable grocery bags again because I will be the toast of the Jefferson City Hy-Vee with my Homer Simpson Baggu.

So many classic Homers.

Yes, my darling sister Susie got this at Nordstrom. You read that right. We pondered what it meant that Nordstrom and Baggu partnered to bring shoppers Simpsons merchandise. Are they making fun of us? Are they trying to appeal to nostalgia for a specific age group (but which age group??)? Does being a Simpsons fan have a different connotation now, that of not being a huge nerd? Are these supposed to be gag gifts? So many questions and no answers. But, a great Baggu for this girl.

Then, an even stranger thing happened. My mother and I ventured to Pottery Barn Kids (and Teen) and found Simpsons Pajamas in the after-Christmas discount bin. There were only two pairs left and you bet we snagged one. I could not love these more.

Please share your ideas for what these swanky stores selling Simpsons merchandise means in the comments.

What are you reading?

by chuckofish

Did you get a lot of good books for Christmas? Me too.

Yes it’s true. I contain multitudes.

Oh, for grace to acknowledge you, to obey you, to love you. And as the Father has set you upon your throne, may his grace also give you the throne of my heart! And while all your enemies must bow before you, may all your friends and followers rejoice in your service! Even so, Amen!

Robert Hawker, Puritan (1753-1827)

Now it is two days of work before the four-day weekend. Ugh and a million emails to catch up with. Even so, Amen.

Count it all joy*

by chuckofish

Our little family group had a joyful Christmas with lots of baby holding…

…good food…

…and drink…

…presents…

and more baby holding…

and lots of sitting around talking which is the best of all.

We are recovering today and feeling sad and weepy because our precious angel and her darling Mommy and Daddy are driving home to far away Maryland. But you’ve got to take the bitter with the sweet. We are grateful they were able to visit and we look forward to our next get-together.

Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

The Boxing Day Beat

by chuckofish

It’s 8:48 on Boxing Day morning and Tim and I are up and drinking tea, while the other two still slumber and outside the snow is falling steadily. Our Christmas was full of good cheer, wonderful gifts, too much food and loads of fun — so I took only a couple of photos. Here’s the tree before the unwrapping:

and a surprisingly creepy pic of my sons wearing the socks that Santa left in their stockings.

In case you are wondering, those are dinosaur feet and cat paws — exactly what everyone needs.

We talked on the phone/Zoomed with our far-flung loved ones, ate too much chocolate (okay, I ate too much chocolate) and had an uproarious time playing ‘name that tune’ late into the night. This morning I am too tired to describe my presents or take more photos. That will have to wait until next week. Suffice it to say that we hope Boxing Day is as quiet as Christmas was jolly.

Let us remember that although our celebration is over, Christmas is not. The story goes on. The Wise Men are still traveling and Jesus and his family still need to escape Herod’s murderous plot. Their roads will be difficult and full of danger.

H.O. Tanner, 1923

As we wind up this year, which for most of us wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been, let us commit to keeping Christmas all year long!

Joyful as a choir

Here’s hoping you all have a holly jolly Christmas…

..and that things don’t get too out of control.

But try to take a moment to remember why we celebrate…

Remembering that it happened once,
We cannot turn away the thought,
As we go out, cold, to our barns
Toward the long night’s end, that we
Ourselves are living in the world
It happened in when it first happened,
That we ourselves, opening a stall
(A latch thrown open countless times
Before), might find them breathing there,
Foreknown: the Child bedded in straw,
The mother kneeling over Him,
The husband standing in belief
He scarcely can believe, in light
That lights them from no source we see,
An April morning’s light, the air
Around them joyful as a choir.
We stand with one hand on the door,
Looking into another world
That is this world, the pale daylight
Coming just as before, our chores
To do, the cattle all awake,
Our own frozen breath hanging
In front of us; and we are here
As we have never been before,
Sighted as not before, our place
Holy, although we knew it not.

And I thought this was funny:

Baby update: still cute!

by chuckofish

After our busy day on the roads of mid-MO, we took it easy with some long naps and cuddle sessions. In fact, we didn’t make much headway on our holiday-prep to-do list because we were too preoccupied by our baby hangouts. Is there anything better than a smiley babe?

Tonight, we watched Meet Me in St. Louis, featuring the original “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The lyrics are a tad too apropo.

My Missouri pride was really in effect today as we also took a jaunt to Jefferson City to see my Christmas decorations and the Capitol. I roped one of my co-workers into giving the fam bam a VIP tour including a trip up to the rotunda Whispering Gallery. On the way, we peaked out one of the windows overlooking the floors from the third to the first floor. As you can see, Katie was quelle interested.

Legend has it that the Missouri Capitol Whispering Gallery is the first one of its kind intentionally designed so that a person whispering on one side could be heard by those standing on the other side. We climbed 54 steps (!!) to get up there, but I think we all thought it was worth it.

A trip to the Treasurer’s Office is not complete without a visit to the VAULT. Although, we realized that a vandal had literally stolen some of the handles from the spinny wheel. The State’s cash money is no longer stored in the vault, but the excitement of opening the heavy door is still real.

Sadly, we did not take any pictures together, nor did we take any pictures outside under the clear blue sky. However, I’m pretty sure the quick stop to downtown Jeff City and nearby Fulton, MO did impress our worldly visitors from back east.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, muddling through or not.

When you see a guy with a stick in his eye

Daughter # 1 and I were singing to wee Katie and were not able to remember the “real” lyrics to Guys and Dolls (see above) so we looked them up.

We had fun, but she was not impressed:

We also found the Fireside Book of American Folk Songs–a classic published in 1957–

and we sang all our faves, but again:

“Who are they, Mommy?”

I guess our singing stinks, but we had fun anyway. Katie forgave us. Singing is not something I have done much of lately (no church) so I am out of practice, but it is fun and I recommend it. It lightens the spirits.

I will also note that last night we watched the 1951 Alastair Sim version of Scrooge. It was great. The Barbara Allen scene always makes me cry.

…as does the whole second half of the movie. (“Barbara Allen” is in the Fireside book, by the way, and we sang it in the afternoon.) Watch it or, better yet, read the Dickens book which the movie faithfully follows:

“I don’t know what to do!” cried Scrooge, laughing and crying in the same breath; and making a perfect Laocoön of himself with his stockings. “I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to every-body! A happy New Year to all the world! Hallo here! Whoop! Hallo!”

–Charles Dickens

At the very least, send a check to the Salvation Army.

Postcards from the weekend

by chuckofish

Team gray quilted sweatshirts

The weekend whizzed by. We jumped into our Christmas break with much baby gazing.

The cousins got acquainted. The wee laddie let “Baby Katie” hold his Hot Wheels and when she put one in her mouth, he said, “Don’t put that in your mouth! That’s a car!”

“Peace, brother!”

Katie learned about dance parties with Aunt Mary.

(My beautiful baby with her baby.)

Carla and Becky drove by for a socially distanced outdoor viewing of the wee babe.

Katie checked out the nativity figures and we actually managed to decorate the tree.

We washed a lot of dishes and did many loads of laundry. “She puts the toot in cutie patootie!”

Five days ’til Christmas! We’ll keep baby gazing and counting our blessings. Don’t forget to check out the sky tonight!
