The party’s over

by chuckofish

Since New Year’s Eve is tomorrow, you may find the title of this post a little premature, but the party is over for us. Sons #2 and #3 have left, and the rest of us are back at work. We have no plans to celebrate the new Year and will probably be in bed long before midnight.  I’m not complaining. We had a superb Christmas!

Everything looked peaceful and pretty.

The cat even sat on my lap (briefly).

Gifts came with elaborate cards and difficult riddles, and there was at least one shudder-inducing present.

It’s alive! Nicole can now make her own Kombucha

We received books, music, DVDs (including the wonderful Captain Newman, M.D. from my DP), art (again, from my DP), socks, and things less easy to categorize. We played board games, talked and talked, and ate too much chocolate.  The cat entertained us with her feline combat skills. When temperatures plummeted way below zero (into the -20s), we had an excuse to stay inside. It was so much fun that I forgot to take pictures and most of the ones I did shoot turned out like this:

It has a certain modernist appeal, don’t you think?

But now the party’s over and it’s time to look forward to a new year.  I’ve settled on one New Year’s resolution, which I’m stealing from my dear Dual Personality’s post yesterday. I’m going to “foil my foes with joy”!  What about you?

Here’s a poem to contemplate as the new year dawns:

Barter, by Sara Teasdale

Life has loveliness to sell,
   All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
   Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children’s faces looking up
Holding wonder in a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,
   Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
   Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit’s still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
   Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
   Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.

Happy New Year!

Come to rifle Satan’s fold

NCwyeth.jpg

Twas much,
that man was
made like God before,
But that God should
be like man
much more

–John Donne (1572-1631)

Lest we forget.

This little babe, so few days old,
Is come to rifle Satan’s fold;
All hell doth at his presence quake.
Though he himself for cold do shake,
For in this weak unarmèd wise
The gates of hell he will surprise.

With tears he fights and wins the field;
His naked breast stands for a shield;
His battering shot are babish cries,
His arrows looks of weeping eyes,
His martial ensigns cold and need,
And feeble flesh his warrior’s steed.

His camp is pitchèd in a stall,
His bulwark but a broken wall,
The crib his trench, hay stalks his stakes,
Of shepherds he his muster makes;
And thus, as sure his foe to wound,
The angels’ trumps alarum sound.

My soul, with Christ join thou in fight;
Stick to the tents that he hath pight;
Within his crib is surest ward,
This little babe will be thy guard.
If thou wilt foil thy foes with joy,
Then flit not from this heavenly boy.

Christmas vacation is coming to an end. Sigh. It’s back to work on Tuesday. Still can’t believe how 2017 raced by. Here’s hoping you foil thy foes with joy in 2018.

And, remarkably, no one got sick!

The diet starts next week.

So we’ve been pretty preoccupied these last few days. We’ll be back soon when we have a minute to reconnoiter.

Daughter #2 and her DH are heading back east today. Uncle Nate was a big hit.

Things will slow down a bit now. Everybody needs a rest.

Hope you enjoyed your Christmas long weekend!

Hey! Unto you a child is born!*

by chuckofish

While perusing the internet recently, I kept coming across the phrase “the war on Christmas”. I’m not going to comment on this notion other than to say that (true or not) there’s a simple remedy. There’s nothing stopping us from celebrating as we choose. Go all out! I don’t mean with parties and decorations and presents. I mean really celebrate the birth of Jesus. Naysayers can’t stand happy people. And we have plenty to feel happy about.

Despite some nasty winter weather, my last traveler has arrived safely home, and we are now in full pre-Christmas activity  mode. Currently, four of us are scattered around the living room with laptops and tea, while outside it’s loudly sleeting. Son #1 is at work — poor lad.

The cat, having chased the red laser dot up and down the stairs multiple times, has collapsed on the sofa with Keekaw.

We are almost ready for the big day. Our wrapping is just about done, we made a kitty cave out of a box (you can see it in the background in this picture), and we’re preparing a list so the DH can go foraging for supplies.

What’s more, the Christmas cactus actually has ONE flower!

It’s only the second time I’ve gotten it to flower, so I’m super pleased.

Remember to take the time to enjoy your Christmas. It’s important!

If all goes well today, and barring any travel mishaps, everyone should be home tonight! The wee babes are coming over and we are babysitting while their parents go to a party. They will get their first look at White Christmas (1954) and can start storing that great dialogue away for future reference.

A momentous occasion to be sure!

We do not expect to have a white Christmas ourselves…

…but that’s okay with me. Maybe there will be a little “mood snow” as our favorite meteorologist Dave Murray calls it…

Meanwhile…

I’ll toast y’all tonight!

O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel ; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP)

I watched A Charlie Brown Christmas last night, so now I am ready for Christmas.

I’m sure I have not missed it in 51 years.

Screen Shot 2017-12-20 at 10.33.29 AM.pngI have to say, I am not feeling stressed (knock on wood). I am going to try to take it easy and float downstream.

Here are a few things from the internet.

This short interview with Jean-Claude Van Damme is great.  I use a paper planner too:

Unknown-1

This calendar has weekly scripture quotes: “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.” (Lamentations 3:25)…and all the Jewish holidays!

(I watched the first three episodes of Jean Claude Van Johnson on Amazon. I chuckled throughout. Good to see JCVD back in the saddle and able to laugh at himself.)

And I think I need one of these hats:

I like that–“Antique Archaeology”.

Not yet, but I don’t want to rush Christmas!

Take it easy.

I always read the NYT obituaries. They let us know when the famous, as well as some pretty obscure people, pass away. However, they failed to note the death of one of the giants of reformed Christianity–R.C. Sproul last week.

rc_sproul-300x227.jpg

I guess they are unwilling to acknowledge evangelicals even when their leaders die. Sigh. As you know, I am a member of one of the most liberal denominations out there, but I can appreciate a man like Sproul for his devotion to the Bible and his passionate belief in salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ based on Scripture alone for the glory of God alone. (AMEN) Shame on the NYT for the umpteenth time.

While we are on the subject of obituaries, here is the 2017 TCM Remembers video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uae_iodwpvg

This annual video is always a sad reminder of those familiar faces who have passed out of this world, but who will forever remain on film.

On a cheerier note, here is a new rendition of a familiar Christmas carol. We sing this spiritual at our church and never get it right. But I like this version.

Tomorrow I start my own personal winter break and I can’t wait!

We’re in the home stretch now!

Unknown-1.jpeg

I had the house pretty well cleaned up this weekend. Then the wee babes came over on Sunday night. The wee laddie likes to eat and blow raspberries at the same time, expressing whatever food is in his mouth all over the place! It is a neat trick and c’est la vie. The Christmas creche is fair game as well.

Unknown.png

Although everything he sees goes into his mouth, he is so active he seems to burn off any and all calories. Case in point: the wee laddie climbed all the way up our stairs to the second floor.

Unknown-2.pngUnknown-1.png

Talk about Mt. Crumpit! I wish I had the core strength of our 16 lb. dynamo.

Little Lottiebelle takes a more measured approach to things. She is unimpressed by her brother’s antics and accomplishments.

Unknown-5

Stairs? No way, José!

And I hear the wee babes went to see a certain jolly old elf…

They’re not afraid…

Well, this week I will wind things up at work and finish my to-do list and await the arrival of daughter #2 and Nate and daughter #1 on Friday. Woohoo!

P.S. I know you are impressed with my ability to screenshot Snapchat videos, right? I impress myself sometimes.

Today is my dear dual personality’s birthday! I will think of her often, as I do every day, and miss her.

IMG_2995.JPG

IMG_2994.JPG

I hope that all the men in her life (one husband and three sons) take care to lavish her with the love and attention she deserves.

Anyway, I am glad to hear that her grades are in and that she is officially on sabbatical! Huzzah!

Although she is nowhere near her 71st birthday, I still like this poem by Walt Whitman, My 71st Year:

After surmounting threescore and ten,
With all their chances, changes, losses, sorrows,
My parents’ deaths, the vagaries of my life, the many tearing passions of me, the war of ‘63 and ‘4,
As some old broken soldier, after a long, hot, wearying march, or as haply after battle,
At twilight, hobbling, answering yet to company roll-call, Here, with vital voice,
Reporting yet, saluting yet the Officer over all.

Happy Day! It’s a week ’til Christmas!
