Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come*

calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutions

The blogosphere, as you can imagine, is all about new year’s resolutions right now. Lists of resolutions: lose weight, quit smoking, save money, get fit, drink less, manage stress. You get the picture. Well, no thanks. January, I will admit, is a good month to get one’s closets in order, to edit one’s stuff, to clean house. But so is every month. You gotta keep up with these things or you can be buried alive.

That goes for a lot of things.

When it comes to New Years Resolutions, we can do better. I suggest we read the Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards– all 70 of them.

According to the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale, the Resolutions were Edwards’ guidelines for self-examination. Puritans set great store by biblical injunctions to submit themselves to divine searching and to monitor their motives and actions. On a community level, congregations were exhorted to practice introspection as a duty of great consequence.

Edwards lays out the Resolutions in a matter-of-fact style, treating them much like scientific principles. Of the seventy resolutions, the first one dated, No. 35, was written on December 18, 1722, when the Diary begins. The last, No. 70, was composed on August 17, 1723.

Let’s resolve to be more self-examining. We can do better.

“There are always two sides to every story, and it is generally wise, and safe, and charitable, to take the best; and yet there is probably no one way in which persons are so liable to be wrong, as in presuming the worst is true, and in forming and expressing their judgement of others, and of their actions, without waiting till all the truth is known.”
― Jonathan Edwards, Charity & Its Fruits

Back to the salt mines or You’ve got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone*

by chuckofish

Having gotten up at 4 a.m. to drive daughter #1 to the airport to catch an early flight back to NYC, I am now heading off to the salt mines where I may get a bit of rest after all the holiday hoopla.

Last week is kind of a blur. A blur filled with parties,

gift giving (and receiving),

eating too much , drinking more than usual,

shopping a lot, going to church (even a funeral)

and talking pretty much non-stop.

We also watched Mary Poppins and the next night saw Saving Mr. Banks, which I enjoyed very much.

I was in the third grade when I first saw Mary Poppins in 1964.

We went to see it at the fabulous Fox Theatre downtown for my dual personality’s 6th birthday. We went to the University Club for dinner first. It was a huge deal. The build-up was big. We must have been so excited. I just remember loving it–every minute–and being so sad when it was over. And wanting to go again, which we did.

When was the last time you felt like that at the end of a movie?

While you’re mulling over this question, here’s a little something fun from the Ashmoelean Museum at Oxford:

After the party’s over

We had a wonderful Christmas, full of (slightly hysterical) laughter and good cheer (lots and lots of “cheer”)

birthday flowers (I bought myself)

and now we are enjoying our presents,

and catching up on our reading.

books

I’m already deeply immersed in my fab cousin Ulysses  (thank you dual personality!) along with two beautiful Assyrian books straight from the Louvre (yes, they’re in French), plus a huge, 10-books-in-one compendium of a fantasy series that I wanted to reread. There is plenty of music, too, but I’ll save it for another post.

All is not wine and bon bons, however. I’ve put the boys to work cleaning their rooms.

It’s so satisfying! Please note: youngest son was also working in his room, but he is reclusive and doesn’t allow photography.

Nor have the old folk been let off the hook. The husband has been madly grading and this morning I’m off to church to do session-y things. Outside it’s still winter-ice-land, but travel is fine.

CALVIN AND HOBBES CHRISTMAS REQUEST LIST TO DAD

Well, daughters #1 and 2 have arrived safe and sound back in our flyover state for the holidays. We will be in and out this week as you can imagine.

Happy December 23!

Ice, ice, baby…

by chuckofish

or, if we want to be highbrow, “a cold coming they had of it”. This year Christmas has involved travel for all three boys, starting with the youngest, whom I collected from college yesterday during the first phase of a three day period of very bad weather. Driving was an adventure mostly involving slush, fog, sleet, and freezing rain.

Snowy_Road_V2

— approximately nine hours of excitement, especially after a piece broke off the driver’s side windshield wiper. We even had a deer bolt across the road in front of us. I’m getting anxiety chest pains just thinking about it.But we have my birthday CDs (gifts from sons 2 and 3) to help us focus: the Civil Wars:

and James Blunt’s new CD, which Youtube won’t let me embed, but you can find there if you’re interested. They’re both good and I recommend them highly!

After we got home I took my wine into the family room and binged on “Heart of Dixie”.  Can you blame me?

Relaxing, thank you!

Relaxing, thank you!

You might wonder why I did not make my DH do this trip. The truth is I was saving the best for him. Today our weather forecast has been upgraded (or downgraded, depending how you look at it). The National weather service has this to say:

Winter Weather Advisory is cancelled.

The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued an Ice Storm Warning, which is in effect from 7 am this morning to 7 pm EST Sunday. The Winter Weather Advisory has been cancelled. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

I can hear the ice hitting our windows even as I type this. Our eldest son is due into Syracuse tonight by train at about 9, which in theory would mean a 5 hour round trip in the car. Unless the weather service is wrong (and I fervently hope they are), it looks like a hotel stay of at least one night for the boy and (possibly) his father. Seriously, we don’t want them to end up like this:

Keep your fingers crossed!

Meanwhile, boy #2 is in Paris living it up doing research for his mother.

Look, mom, no feet!

Look, mom, no feet!

See…here he is in the Louvre with one of the guardian figures from Sargon’s palace at Dur-Sharrukin. Pretty cool, eh? And with any luck, all this bad weather will be done before we have to pick him up at the airport in Montreal.

Here’s a nice prayer from the 1929 Scottish Book of Common Prayer:

ALMIGHTY Father, who art present in thy power in every place: Give ear in thy loving-kindness to the supplications which we offer unto thee on behalf of our brethren and friends now absent from us; may thy mighty hand shield and protect them from all evil; may thy Holy Spirit guide them in the right way and bless their going out and their coming in; and grant that, being united by our fellowship with thee, we may all at the last be gathered in the home which is above; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Stay safe all you travelers!

So recently the Man Repeller’s Amelia Diamond was cogitating about who she would choose as her celebrity BFF. You can read it here. This is a brilliant topic.

She was writing about her imaginary friendship with Mindy Kaling, a twenty-something wunderkind with whom I can not relate. Daughters #1 and 2 think she is hilarious, but I’m afraid I am neither young or hip enough to get her. She went to Dartmouth and so did my BFF, so we have that going for us. I will probably reverse my opinion on Mindy at some future point, but sorry, no.

The comment section of this post was fascinating. Answers included Emma Stone, Tina Fey, Cecily Strong, Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Axl Heck from The Middle and Bernadette and Penny from The Big Bang Theory. And Angela Lansbury. (I have no idea whether these people realize that some of these are fictional characters or if they mean the actors who play them. If that is, indeed, the case, they should know the names of their BFFs.) Okay then.

Well anyway celebrities don’t really matter much to me these days. The only well-known person I would like to hang out with is of course, Bob Dylan. We could be BFFs.

We are a lot alike. We read a lot. We stay out of politics. We love the Lord. He is a better and more prolific writer than I am, but I understand the process. We trust our gut. We are even starting to look alike.

And we are in total agreement that:

People are crazy and times are strange
I’m locked in tight, I’m out of range
I used to care, but things have changed…

I have also always felt that Johnny Depp is probably a long lost family member. He always reminded me of my older brother in his younger days. This may come as a surprise to his children, but it’s true.

J-D-johnny-depp-19014825-1600-1200 (1)

Yes, Johnny, in his own flaky way, would fit right in with the Chamberlins. We are the flakiest.

And I mustn’t forget Sarah Michelle Geller,

sarah_michelle_gellar_1245047

who is, after all, like a fourth daughter to me.

the-girls

She would fit right in, don’t you think?

Who would you choose as your celebrity BFF?

P.S. This would be a good night to watch Edward Scissorhands (1990) which qualifies as a Christmas movie after all.

One for the little bitty baby

The+Kingston+Trio+-+The+Last+Month+Of+The+Year+-+LP+RECORD-530122

Our parents were big Kingston Trio fans and I have fond memories of listening to their 1960 Christmas album, The Last Month of the Year.

The album included spirituals and Old English rounds and none of the standard stuff. Nick Reynolds said in an interview later that “musically, it came off very well; it just didn’t sell.” Well, we had a copy and we played it a lot!

Click this link for a little something to whet your appetite for the those clean-cut boys of yore.

for another version of the same song performed by the great Johnny Cash with Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers, and all the lovely Carter ladies.

Listen to it all–you’ll be rockin’ your way closer to Christmas!

P.S. Is this where the expression “five by five” comes from?
