The joys of 1970s Turkish cinema
by chuckofish
Need I say more? Well, I will anyway. My son, Chris, was over for dinner last night (a belated birthday feast of stew for the now 17 year old) and our typically intellectual postprandial discussion turned to the merits (?) of Turkish cinema. Here’s a fine example from a 1970s film whose Turkish title loosely translates to “Karate Girl”.
Ah, the post-modern decor, the mustachios, the angst-ridden death scream. The special effects are, well, very, very special. Hollywood remake anyone? Whom would you cast?

In all actuality, though, Karate Girl is to Turkey what Citizen Kane is to the rest of the world.
Are you saying “Karate Girl” has been supplanted by the Turkish equivalent of “Vertigo” as the best movie of all time?
Good heavens! It’s hard to imagine any Turkish movie being better than “Karate Girl” and the mind reels (literally) at the idea of a Turkish “Vertigo”!
Heavens to Betsy–I am speechless! But I do know that Chris is not 17!
Gee, I wasn’t clear at all, was I? Chris was over for dinner, but of course, we were celebrating Tim’s b-day. Yikes, I’m becoming senile.
