My dual personality wrote about our brother the other day, posting some pictures from her graduation weekend back in 1981(!). Here is another photo of the three of us just before we were about to leave for Bradley International Field in Hartford in our brother’s blue station wagon (the “Blue Goose”). We look a little worse for wear, don’t you think? We’d probably been up late celebrating. We were some wild and crazy guys back then.

Ah, the Blue Goose — so many fond memories and terrifying moments — especially of staying up all night driving back to St. Louis to your wedding.Talk about being a little worse for wear!
Our brother owned many scary cars in his time. The worst was the one in which he drove (with me) from Williams College up to Vermont one Thanksgiving. He could not stop it without putting his foot out the door and dragging it. I think it was a VW bug but I have excised those memories from my brain…
Do you remember the red (was it a ) valiant? He and Tom came to get me from Smith and they couldn’t turn the car off because they had to start it at a run on a hill. When we stopped to watch the sun rise at Crawford notch, the car died and they pushed it while I put it in gear and then moved to the passenger seat while they jumped in and started the car. Quelle adventure!
I think they called it the red brick. OMG. Our mother would have died if she had known this was going on. It was always interesting having our brother visit us at college!
Chris also had a green duster, the Dodge version of a Plymouth Valiant. The Brick (I think it had once been Joanna’s car) had a better engine than the Duster, but a worse body, so Chris and Tom Machek swapped the engines in the driveway at 231. They used a tripod made of logs from the yard as an engine hoist. I rode with Chris several times to fish the Meramec and Current rivers in that Duster.
Great picture, but the comment thread makes the post. Did you guys ever get treated to the VW bus that was painted like an American flag? I’ve always wanted to see a picture of that one!
I know, right? But I have no memory of a VW van painted like an American flag.
