Saint Paul by Burne-Jones
The First Lesson appointed for use on the Feast of Brigid (today) is one of my favorites:
Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Frederick Buechner writes that when he first met St. Paul and these lines, he “had the feeling that I knew something of what he was talking about. Something of the divine comedy we are all of us involved in. Something of grace.”
God turns everything upside down.
And god forbid that we should take ourselves too seriously.
dual personalities 
Well right now God is making me serve on a committee with someone who really get under my skin…and other people who insert their political beliefs into EVERYTHING! My blood pressure is surging. I guess it’s a test.
I’m sure you will do your best to shame the wise ones on that committee. Now take a chill pill. š

Why aren’t there more Catholic churches named after St. Paul?
St. Paul is definitely more popular with Protestant Churches because he was all about “working out your own salvation with fear and trembling” and salvation by faith alone–not big in the RC Church. They tend to prefer St. Peter, who they claim as the rock and founder of their church.
Too true. Tongue-in-cheek. Paul was probably one of the smartest men in recorded history but also the humblest. I love Paul and I haven’t read him nearly as much as I’d wish. If Francis Crawford of Lymond read him, then I should appreciate him. And of course, he’s your favorite too. š
